Medication Abortion

CARE THAT FITS YOU

Understanding Your Options

At RISE, we offer both medication abortion and procedural abortion. A medication abortion can be used to end an early pregnancy instead of an in-clinic procedure. It involves two medications, mifepristone and misoprostol, to cause a person to pass a pregnancy, similar to a miscarriage. About a third of all early abortions in the United States and Canada are medication abortions. Our team is happy to discuss this option with you.

When you arrive at our clinic, you will go through an intake process:

  • Complete paperwork
  • Have an ultrasound exam
  • Complete lab work
  • Meet with our patient educator.
    • You will learn what to expect during your medication abortion
    • You will learn what to expect after your medication abortion
  • You will have as much time as you’d like to speak with our nurses and clinician to make sure all of your questions are answered.

After your intake process:
You will be sent home with the medication abortion pills, as well as clear instructions on how to administer the medication.

Follow-up Care

Follow-up care after a medication abortion is important to confirm that the process is complete and that you are recovering well. This may include an ultrasound, a series of blood tests, or an at-home pregnancy test taken 5–6 weeks later. Our team will talk through each option with you and help determine the approach that best fits your needs.
