I have medical problems, can I still get an abortion?
Most medical conditions don’t prevent someone from having a safe abortion. When you call to schedule, our team will ask you a few questions about your health so we can make sure you get care in the safest place for you, whether that’s in our clinic or in a hospital where extra support is available.
How do you manage pain during the procedure?
We provide expert pain management using moderate sedation, a safe and highly effective method that allows most patients to remain relaxed and comfortable. This is the standard of care in most abortion clinics and our team is expertly trained to ensure you feel supported throughout.
While you may notice some brief cramping or pressure, these sensations are typically well-tolerated. Our patients consistently report feeling safe and well-cared for under this protocol. For patients who are better suited for a hospital environment or who desire general anesthesia, we maintain strong referral partnerships to facilitate that alternative. However, for most, our in-clinic care provides a comfortable, high-quality experience.
Will I have pain after my abortion?
After the abortion, mild cramping is common. We recommend patients take ibuprofen (motrin) and acetaminophen (tylenol), which generally works very well. By the day after the procedure, the majority of patients are feeling very well and have minimal discomfort.
Do you offer keepsakes?
Yes. we offer private cremation, hand prints, foot prints, and photos (when possible).
What is the recovery time?
For all abortions, some experts recommend avoiding intense exercise and avoiding heavy lifting (greater than 20 pounds) for 1 week. However, there are no guidelines and no evidence saying that this is necessary, and the most important thing is for patients to monitor for signs of complications (e.g., heavy bleeding, fever, severe pain, abnormal discharge) and to seek prompt medical attention if these occur.
How long should I wait to have sex after my abortion?
Every person is different regarding when they will feel ready — physically and emotionally — to have sex after their abortion. Here are a couple things to consider:
- To help minimize the risk of infection, some experts recommend waiting until vaginal bleeding has stopped, which is likely to occur within 1-2 weeks after the abortion. This is most important for patients undergoing later abortions (over 24 weeks). Other experts don’t give an exact waiting period because there are no guidelines and no evidence that says what timing is optimal.
- Many people want to get started on an effective form of contraception prior to resuming intercourse, since fertility can return rapidly (you can ovulate 3 weeks after an abortion).
- Consider when you feel emotionally ready; that varies person-to-person.
Consider your individual recovery. If you are experiencing any complications, such as a concern for infection or ongoing pain, contact the clinic right away.
Will I be able to have children in the future?
For nearly everyone, having an abortion does not change your chances of becoming pregnant later when you want to.
Having an abortion does not affect your ability to have children in the future. The most reliable scientific research has never shown a link between an uncomplicated abortion and infertility. The only situations where fertility could be affected are extremely rare medical emergencies—such as very heavy bleeding that cannot be controlled. These kinds of emergencies are very uncommon, and our medical team is trained to handle any bleeding problems if they arise with less invasive treatments.
Are you able to provide medical excuse notes? Or complete FMLA paperwork?
Yes. Our office is happy to provide you with an excuse note after your visit.
We can also complete any FMLA paperwork needed. Please send the forms in advance or bring them to your appointment.
